18-22 MARCH 2009

Vicenza was where Andrea Palladio chose to spend most of his working life, and the majority of his most famous buildings are in this city and the surrounding area. Is there any one else in the history of architecture who has given their name to a whole style of building? 'Palladian' is almost synonymous with 'neoclassical', except that it conveys a sense of airy quality and harmony not present in the more generic term. It is scarcely possible to exaggerate the importance of Palladio's influence on architectural practice and theory during the past five hundred years. On this study weekend we will see many public and private creations by Palladio, ranging from the awesome Basilica in Vicenza's centre to working farm villas in the Vicentina countryside.

By way of contrast we will also spend a day in Verona, famous both for both Roman and Romanesque buildings. Both cities in their different ways are full of charm and interest, with lively historic centres huddled around squares flanked by beautiful buildings and crossed by narrow pedestrian streets filled with sophisticated shops; both also contain interesting art galleries.

We will stay in the heart of Vicenza at a four-star hotel that has very recently been created in an ancient palace. Lecturer will be Dr Cathy Oakes, head of History of Art at the Oxford University Department for Continuing Education; tour organiser will be Martin Gray.

Participants in this study holiday may be interested to know that the five-hundredth anniversary of Palladio's birth on 30 November 2008 will be celebrated by a grand exhibition in Vicenza, and that this exhibition will move to London's Royal Academy from January to April 2009.
