1-5 October, 2008

The city of Mantua, with its compact network of medieval streets and squares, provides a wonderfully atmospheric setting for three artistic and architectural gems.

Mantegna's brilliant frescoes in the Camera degli Sposi depict Lodovico Gonzaga surrounded by his family and court. This room is in the imposing Castello di San Giorgio looking out over the lakes which all but encircle the old city; and the castle itself is part of the huge Palazzo Ducale, home of the Gonzagas and once the largest palace in Europe, with its fifteen courtyards and seven hundred rooms.

At the other end of the city is the Palazzo del Te, the Gonzagas' summer villa created by Giuliano Romano and his pupils and including amongst its many decorated rooms his two masterpieces, 'The Fall of the Giants' and 'The Story of Psyche'.

The Basilica di Sant'Andrea is one of the most complete architectural works by Leon Battista Alberti. It was another of Lodovico Gonzaga's commissions, during the brilliant period when Italy's foremost artists, architects, writers and musicians were attracted to the court at Mantua.

Not far from Mantua is another Gonzaga creation which we will visit. Sabbioneta is a fortified 'ideal city' built in the mid-sixteenth century by Vespasiano Gonzaga Colonna, a fascinating experiment in Renaissance architectural theory and town planning. Though it has now been for many centuries no more than a deserted village, the entire city, including monuments, two palaces, a gallery and a theatre, is exceptionally well preserved.
