8-13 March, 2010

Some people have expressed interest in the possibility of joining me for a week of studying Italian at A Door to Italy, the language school which I have already visited half a dozen times. Here are some comments on the nature of the arrangement.

On the week chosen the school will be offering a special class for beginners. Classes at four higher levels should be running. On the Monday morning of our week's stay the school will test our ability and place us in an appropriate class. We will study Italian in the morning, and explore the city or relax during the afternoon. Genoa is a bustling modern port in an exciting geographic setting (mountains and ocean) with plenty to do and see, and lots of cafes and restaurants. It's off the beaten track for tourists, so this is a cheap city in which to stay. A small group of us could enjoy a very pleasant week of study and good company. There will need to be six participants for the trip to be viable.

Last year I offered various rates for the week, but in the end nearly all the group (there were thirteen of us) stayed in a central four-star hotel, which was good value and where they were very happy. The two of us who'd opted to stay in cheaper 'Bed and Breakfast' establishments were not unhappy with the accommodation, but felt a bit left out of things. So this year I am starting by offering a package at the same hotel as last year (the NH Plaza) - but if anyone wants me to come up with a cheaper arrangement, I can easily do so. Obviously people sharing a room will have a lower price. I'm afraid this study week is considerably more costly than last year: the new price reflects the fact that I am expecting only a small group of participants, and that the pound has dropped in value over the last year, while prices in Italy continue to rise.

Guideline prices, excluding flights:
Per person
  £945

These prices do not include the cost of your flight, but cover the following:
twenty hours of instruction in the Italian language at an appropriate level in the language school A Door to Italy;
six nights at a four-star hotel;
an occasional and informal programme of cultural activities in the afternoons.

At the time of writing British Airways flights as below can be bought over the net for £94, and about £15 more if purchased through a travel agent:

Sunday 7 March BA2688 Gatwick (London) to Genoa 10:05 / 13:05

Saturday 13 March
BA2689 Genoa to Gatwick (London) 13:50 / 14:50
