11-16 January 2005

Siena has a remarkable preserved medieval historic centre. We owe this to the suppression of the city's power by the Medici dukes, who finally defeated Siena in 1554, after centuries of combat between the two city states. Florentine domination of Renaissance art also led great Sienese painters, such as Duccio and Simone Martini, to be relatively ignored.

At the heart of Siena is the Palazzo Pubblico, its halls filled with frescoes, which dominates the shell-shaped Campo, where the famous Palio horse race is run. Other things that we will see include Duccio's masterpiece, the Maestà; the cathedral, filled with priceless works of art from different periods; many interesting churches and palaces; and Siena's excellent art gallery. All these are contained in the city's tight-knit centre, a labyrinth of medieval streets and alleys.

On this visit, we will also visit nearby Arezzo, to see Piero della Francesca's mysterious frescoes of the 'legend of the true cross'.

January weather in Tuscany is unpredictable, but the advantage of visiting Siena and Arezzo in winter is that we will not have to visit the various sites amidst a throng of tourists. The weather may be cold, but days of tranquil winter sunshine are by no means unknown.

Siena has an abundance of cafes and restaurants. As on other Learn Italy holidays, a number of group meals will be organised.

Guideline prices, excluding flights:
Per person, single use of double room:   £785
