Study visit to Ravenna
8 June - 11 June, 2006

Ravenna is now a sleepy and attractive town that all but conceals its distinguished ancient history. In 402 Flavius Honorius made it the Roman imperial residence. In 476 the barbarian leader Odoacer took the city. He was ousted in 493 by the Ostrogoth Emperor Theodoric, who made it his capital. Then, from Theodoric’s defeat by Belisarius in 540 till the eighth century, Ravenna was the seat of the Byzantine viceroys who governed Italy.

The historic centre of Ravenna contains a unique collection of buildings dating from those centuries when it was a leading city of the western world. Eight of these are entered on UNESCO’S World Heritage list. They are:
from the fifth century, the mausoleum of Galla Placida;
and the baptistery of Archbishop Neon;
from the sixth century, the basilica of St Apollinare Nuovo;
the Arian Baptistery;
the chapel of St Andrea;
the church of San Vitale;
the basilica of St Apollinare in Classe;
and the mausoleum of Theodoric.

With the exception of Theodoric’s mausoleum, all are decorated with magnificent, astonishing and beautifully preserved mosaics. These fascinating buildings will be the focus of our visit to Ravenna. We will be guided throughout our stay by an official guide to the sites, Signora Verdiana Boiani, who speaks excellent English. Our accommodation will be in a small but charming hotel within easy walking distance of the main sites. A private coach will be used to visit the two buildings that are not in the city centre. As our hotel has only a dozen rooms, the size of the group is likely to be somewhere between twelve and fifteen.
