24-29 October, 2005

For an English family or young aristocrat on the Grand Tour in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Naples was one of the major destinations in Europe, on a par with Venice. In the twentieth century post-war visitors rushed to nearby resorts in search of sea-side holidays, and ignored the city. Now the changing patterns of tourism have put Naples back on the map as a city perfect for a weekend visit or longer. This is one of the oldest urban civilisations in Europe, dating back to its founding by the Greeks. It has a historic centre of fathomless interest, with noble buildings from every age, from the Gothic of its Angevin kings, to the nineteenth century, reflecting in turn its history as an independent kingdom under the kings of Anjou and the Aragonese, and then rule by the Spanish and the Bourbons before becoming part of the new Italy after the Risorgimento. There are innumerable churches, palaces and cloisters to be explored. The city boasts an excellent collection of fine art at Capodimonte, and one of the world's greatest collections of Roman material in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale.

We will visit these museums and follow carefully chosen itineraries through the old town. Our group is likely to be small, and not large enough to sustain the presence of our own expert guide; however a number of talks will be organised, at least one prior to the trip, introducing different aspects of Naples' history, culture, art, and architecture. One day will be left free, to allow participants to visit places of their choice, for example, Pompeii or Herculaneum, or the fabulous island resorts of Capri or Ischia, or even the Greek temples at Paestum.

Guideline prices, excluding flights:
Price per person, single use of double room:   £910
Price per person sharing a double room:   £795

These prices include:
five nights bed and breakfast in a four-star hotel in central Naples;
a selection of lectures on the history, art and architecture of Naples;
coach travel between Naples airport and the hotel;
travel within Naples, either using public transport or by mini-bus where necessary;

These prices do not include the flight to Italy. Flights on British Airways from Gatwick to Naples currently cost about £150. Tickets on a designated flight can be bought over the net or via our chosen travel agent, when sufficient numbers have expressed an interest in the holiday to be sure that it is going ahead. Dependent on numbers of participants, it may be possible to arrange a private coach to take the group from Oxford to Gatwick and return, at cost price. Some group meals in Naples will be organised, also at cost price.
